FAQs

How Do I book a caravan with Aberdeenshire Caravan Hire?

The quickest and easiest way to book with us is to give us a call, or fill in the customer enquiry form in the 'contact' section. If using the form, please let us know the dates you would like, how many people will be with you (including adults and children) and don't forget to provide a phone number so we can call you back.

We will then check availability, and send you a booking form. Complete the form, send it back to use and that's you booked in. Simple.

Currently, we don't have online payment set up, so we send you an invoice a couple of weeks prior to the hire start date.

Is my vehicle suitable for towing a caravan?

All vehicles are different, so unfortunately the only way to confirm is to refer to the user manual or the V5C document for the vehicle (you can also look it up online using your registration).

The weight of a caravan is often referred to as MTPLM (maximum technically permissible laden mass). This is the maximum weight (including the fixed elements, plus any additional stuff / luggage etc.) that might be in the caravan. This figure differs from caravan to caravan, but ours are generally between 1400kg-1650kg.

What kind of insurance do I need to hire a caravan?

In many cases, you're car insurance will cover towing a caravan on a 3rd party liability basis however if you're not sure, we recommend you notify your insurer.

We also highly recommend that you purchase additional insurance to cover the cost of any accidental damage that might occur during your trip. Note - our caravans are insured for total loss (fire, theft and catastrophic damage, however you will will be responsible for the insurance excess (up to £1000) - please see our T&Cs page.

Do I need a special kind of license to tow a caravan?

The rules about towing a trailer or caravan with a car changed on 16 December 2021. According to GOV.UK, If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’re now allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM (maximum allowable mass). NOTE those who passed before this date, already had this entitlement.

This should be enough for most caravans and cars but ask your supplier and check your driving license information for more details.

Check your car’s handbook to find out its gross train weight (GTW). This is the total allowable weight of the car plus the trailer plus the load.
